A Garden of Remembrance
The garden and burial site were designed by Rosalynn Carter, reflecting the Carters’ love of nature, simplicity, and service. Here, you’ll find:
-
Simple granite headstones marking the graves of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter.
-
A quiet memorial garden perfect for contemplation and appreciation of their lifelong dedication to peace and community.
-
Benches, pathways, and shaded spots ideal for rest and reflection amid tranquil surroundings.

Gardens, Wildlife & Butterfly Habitat
Carter Gardens overlooks a large pond that the Carters enjoyed and includes butterfly-friendly plantings tied to the broader Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail movement, encouraging pollinator habitat and conservation throughout Plains.
Although the house itself isn’t yet open to the public, the gravesite and gardens are open daily, inviting visitors to pay their respects, enjoy peaceful nature, and feel connected to the lives and values of two beloved Georgians.
